The DET is not designed to test basic English knowledge.
It assumes the test-taker already has a working foundation and focuses on how well they can use English in real academic situations.What that means in practice?
The test expects students to already be able to:
Understand complex questions quicklySpeak in connected, logical sentences
Write short but structured responses
Use a range of vocabulary (not just basic words)
Self-correct while speaking or writingA beginner or low-intermediate learner may:
Know grammar rules but struggle to respond spontaneouslyThe DET evaluates performance, not memorization. That’s why it fits intermediate to advanced levels.
